parechesis

By Richard Nordquist, About.com

Definition:

The repetition of the same sound in words that are close together.

Examples:

  • "On the butt-end of a bulging bus which was transbustling an abundance of incubuses and Buchmanites from bumbledom towards their bungalows, a bumptious buckeen whose buttocks were remote from his bust and who was buttired in a boody ridiculous busby, buddenly had a bust-up with a robot buckra who was bumping into him: 'Bucaneer, buzz off, you're butting my bunions!' Rebuffed, he did a bunk.

"But bussequently I buheld him with a buckish buddy who was busuading him to budge a button on his bum-freezer."
(Raymond Queneau, "Parechesis," in Exercises in Style, translated by Barbara Wright, New Directions, 1981)

  • "And just know that I grow colder the older I grow
This boulder on my shoulder gets heavy and harder to hold
And this load is like the weight of the world
And I think my neck is breaking should I just give up,
Or try to live up to these expectations?"
    (Eminem, "Hailie's Song")
Pronunciation: par-eh-KEY-sis
