Prostate and Prostrate

Commonly Confused Words

As both a noun and an adjective, prostate refers to a male gland. As an adjective, prostrate means lying flat on the ground or reduced to extreme weakness. The verb prostrate means to put oneself into a submissive position.

Examples:

  • Rates of high blood pressure, heart disease, and prostate cancer are higher among dark-skinned Americans than among whites.

  • I unbuckled my pack and promptly plopped down on the ground next to a prostrate group of children.
  • Practice:
