Incite and Insight

Commonly Confused Words

The verb incite (accent on the second syllable) means to urge on or provoke. The noun insight (accent on the first syllable) means perception or the ability to understand the true nature of things.

Examples:

  • It has too often been too easy for leaders to incite their people to go to war.

  • "Dreams come true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them." (John Updike)

  • This monastery is a place where insight is transformed into action.

  • "I have frequently gained my first real insight into the character of parents by studying their children." (Arthur Conan Doyle)
