Heroin and Heroine

Commonly Confused Words

Heroin is a highly addictive narcotic. A heroine is a woman known for her special achievements or the principal female character in a novel or play.

Examples:

  • "News, particularly daily news, is more addictive than crack cocaine, more addictive than heroin, more addictive than cigarettes." (Dan Rather)

  • The heroine of House of Mirth, Lily Bart, is one of the great characters in American literature.
