Monday's word was an Italian loan, baldachin: "a rich embroidered fabric of silk and gold," from Baldacco, the Italian name for Baghdad.

Then again, Monday's word was Z-list, a recent American coinage that refers to a "(notional) list comprising only the very least celebrated or important members of a particular group; esp. used to emphasize extreme insignificance."

Antonymically, Monday's word was salient: a Latin import that originally meant "moving by leaps or springs" and now means "standing out conspicuously: prominent; especially: of notable significance."

It all depended on whose word of the day arrived in your email on Monday morning.
